Smashburger Smashes Into Boulder!

Restaurant review by @Tekee, Ted Stauffer (Scoop The Dirt Tech)

Today the Denver based company Smashburger unleashed its fury on Boulder. Inviting several social media aficionados, including me and Scoop The Dirt’s Gabe Lee. In all there were probably 40-50 of us that got a sneak peek at their offerings one day before their grand opening on Wednesday, March 10, 2010.

In addition to the regular menu that some of you may be familiar with, the Colorado stores also offer a couple of specials. The Colorado Smashburger (a popular favorite today) is a one-third or half-pound smashed grilled patty, topped with grilled fresh green chilies, melted cheddar, pepper jack cheese, lettuce, tomato and mayo on a toasted chipotle bun. Here is a picture the goodness…

The Colorado Dog is the second special and is dressed out in a similar fashion.

As unique as Boulder is however, they decided that it needed its own signature burger. What they came up with is the Black Bean Smashburger, a black bean patty smashed, seared and seasoned, pepper jack cheese, guacamole, lettuce, tomato, onion, chipotle mayo and fresh jalapenos topped with tortilla chips on a chipotle bun. I may have to go back and try this one sometime, that is if I am not drawn to the delicious Colorado burger again. Either way, I WILL go back!

A big thank you to my friend, Brett Greene for ensuring I was among the invitees. Please check out the rest of Smashburger’s menu and go visit them sometime soon. In the meantime, take a look at the video of today’s event below…

The best cookies from around the US | It's down to the the final two!

Our own Jenny D. is somewhat of a pro when it comes to cookies. She can tell, practically by the smell, what a cookie is made out of, if they use real butter or margarine, who makes it and where the cookie can be found. This weekend we took two of the top cookie contenders, one from Paradise Bakery and one from Specialty’s Bakery, and put them to the test…

Here are the “guidelines” that Jen has when dealing with … cookies

Each characteristic is rated on a scale of 1 to 10

1 Chip to dough ratio

2 Initial appearance and appeal to the eye

3 Crunchiness to chewiness ratio

4 Taste, including the “finish

5 Quality of ingredients, especially the chocolate- should taste like chocolate and not waxy, grainy, sugary, or dusty.

Most importantly Jen says, “Do not use margarine, margarine makes the middle of the cookie look flat and greasy and detracts from eye appeal and the taste is unacceptable!”

Enjoy the two best cookies in the US!

IF you have a cookie you think is better than one of these, let us know and we will put your cookie to the Jenny D. test.

Conan’s last stand…

It was a quick seven months, Conan’s brief stint as host of the Tonight Show.

As the curtain fell on the stage which had not yet even begun to collect dust, I reflected on the show that pretty much never was.

Ok, that’s bullshit.  I watched Conan’s Tonight Show for the very first time last night, and never saw it live.  Conan’s Last Show caught my eye on Hulu, so I decided to check it out.  While not a huge Conan fan, I respect him, and am always intrigued by what can only be called television history.

In viewing the hour-long send off, I could only think that this was not a Goodbye to Conan, but a Goodbye to NBC.

Conan will no doubt succeed in whatever he decides to do next.  He has the talent, and the audience.

NBC I cannot be so sure of.

In this age of Tivo, DVR, Hulu, and all of the other non-network television means of viewing programs, there is really no need for any loyalty to a network.  Everyone with a TV has cable.  Anyone who wants to watch Conan will be able to do so however they please, whenever they please.   We are entering a time when networks no longer matter.  Programming does.

Take, for example, the ridiculously funny It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. I am a huge fan of this show, and I just had to do the google to find out it airs on FX.  I watch it on Hulu, or I get it through Netflix.  I have NEVER seen it on FX.

You get my point.  Conan will be fine.  He could air exclusively on the web, or choose a less than popular cable network.  His fans will find him.  But what does NBC have to offer?  Jaywalking, again?

Good luck.

Now, back to Conan’s last show.

If you haven’t seen it, please do yourself a favor and watch it on Hulu.  It was a masterpiece.

As I said, I am not a huge fan, but Conan definitely can make me laugh at times.  His last episode seriously made me laugh and cry.  He made fun of himself, his situation, and NBC, all with class.  He managed to get Neil Young to deliver one of the most touching versions of Long May You Run I’ve ever heard, solo acoustic.  He addressed his fans, tears in his eyes, thanking them for the unbelievable support he’s received.  He thanked NBC for the last twenty years of his life, of which he said he would change nothing.

He left with a message to his young fans:

Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you’re kind, amazing things will happen.

And to prove it, he went on to rock out Freebird (with Will Ferrell on cowbell!)md_horiz

He’s as free as a bird, now.

Will you still remember him?

Casa Natalia in San Jose Del Cabo Mexico

The reputation of Casa Natalia is astounding. Magazines and the web are aflutter; praising the architectural design and overall hospitality of this cozy little getaway located in the historic Spanish Colonial village of San Jose Del Cabo on the southern tip of Baja California (that’s in Mexico on the left side of for you non-travelers).

It is just a two hour flight from California or Arizona. We flew from Seattle so it was about 3.5 for us but it was well worth it. Casa Natalia is just a 15min. van ride from the airport costing about $30 for two people but if you chat up the person at counter in Spanish you can save a few dollars to start your trip on a good note, we saved $4, woohoo :)

This Small Hotel has been dubbed a Small Luxuary hotel

“Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ is an unsurpassed collection of over 500 hotels spanning more than 70 countries, which together offer an infinite variety of experiences. Whatever your inclination, Small Luxury Hotels of the World™ is guaranteed to have that exclusive hotel with its own unique character and charm.”

They have also received a rating of four diamonds from AAA
not an easy task considering how only 0.27 percent of the 60,000 AAA Diamond Rated lodgings and restaurants throughout the United States, Canada, the Caribbean and Mexico, receive more than four diamonds. Good job guys!

“a rating of One to Five Diamonds is assigned, based on lodging and restaurant published guidelines for facilities, amenities, and service.”

They have consistently been written up as the top 100 hotels in the world and can be seen in:
Travel & Leisure Magazine, Bride, and Bridal guide, Wine spectator, Vanity Fair and many others.

“Set in a secluded enclave of 39 palm trees, waterfalls and tropical flowers that echoes the spectacular natural beauty of the Baja Peninsula With its striking, contemporary architecture and 14 Deluxe Guest Rooms and 2 Spa Suites individually decorated with local art-craft, staying at Casa Natalia is like staying in an authentic Mexican home. From the moment you enter until the very moment you hesitate to leave. Please note that the property does allow children 13 and older.” –From www.casanatalia.com

People you should Look for:
Owners: Nathalie and Loïc Tenoux (He is also the executive chief)
Outstanding wait staff: Enrique, Christian and David to name a few.
The Concierge: Marco, guy you talk to if you want to check out their free DVD selection (Hey even I want to rest after a hard day at the beach.)

The Scoop:

  • Rooms are a little pricey if you are just looking to booze it up in Mexico, but a must buy if you want a romantic getaway and to see some culture while you are at it.
  • Average room rate $230-$575/night
  • They are located in a small and very clean village in “Los Cabos” they are NOT on the beach, but that’s OK because you have the option to take a free or very inexpensive van ride to a hotel on the beach that they have so brilliantly partnered up with. There you will have the ocean side infinity pools (some heated) and great to-your-pool-chair service. They are also just a beach stroll away from a relatively un-crowded swimming beach.
  • Free WiFi in the lobby and restaurant
  • Internet (for a fee) in your room
  • Free DVD movies
  • They have an amazing menu, try the risotto followed up by the best flan you will ever have.
  • The drinks are amazing I recommend “El mar de Cortez” a sweet blue taste of heaven ;)
  • When you are on the beach, look out for whales, you can easily spot them from poolside.
  • Next door is Damiana, try their Fajitas and amazing Margaritas.

Things to think about:
It’s Mexico so people tend to speak Spanish, if you at least try to learn/speak the basics you will be a lot better off. It is in no way necessary, especially at Casa Natalia because everyone speaks English wonderfully (and the few that struggle are very much understandable!) So don’t be like “an American” and think they should know English. Suck it up, try to have fun and learn some damn Spanish.

Special note: To those four blonds that were eating dinner Mi Cocina that whistled to the waiter to get your check and actually yelled, “You hoo!” I am truly disappointed in you. That has to be the nicest restaurant I have ever been in South of the border. You make me and all other North Americans look and sound like garbage. I was ashamed to be “an American” You did not ruin my evening though, in fact I tweeted about you and many other people had nasty comments for you. Thanks!

Whistler-Blackcomb in BC, Canada

Where do I start? Jen and I ventured over to Whistler Blackcomb to see “North America’s top ski and snowboard resort”. I was born in Juneau Alaska and raised in Boulder Colorado so when I got a chance to visit Whistler I couldn’t say no. It was amazing; when we got there the base was 94in with  over 36in of fresh powder!

Info for Whistler Blackcomb:
8,100 acres of terrain
Highest lift elevation – 2284 m (7493 ft)
200 trails
Terrain Parks
kids adventure parks
Heli-Skiing and boarding
..and more

Let’s compare shall we?
Aspen 675 acres
Mammouth Mountian 3,500 acres
Vail 5,289 acres

I grew up riding Vail and other Colorado mountains, but having a chance to ride Whistler Blackcomb was something I could not give up. One semi-leisurely run lasted about 30min. Not too bad Canada! I had a blast and usually I would have interviewed someone at the mountain but I was too busy playing in the powder.

Watch the Video here:

Winter 2010 Olympics:

That’s right Whistler Blackcomb will host the 2010 winter Olympics. We saw some of the semi-pros catching some air off of a giant kicker and through a ring-of-fire. Nice!

Fresh Tracks:

OK, so the lifts open up at 8:30am and why not already be up at the top to be one of the first to make tracks? With a “Fresh Tracks” ticket (an additional $17.25) you can hop on a gondola and ride up to the top an hour before the masses. They will feed you a buffet-style breakfast (if you can contain your excitement long enough to breathe and eat at the same time.) Within 30-45min you can be carving your way down the beautiful mountain with no one around to hear you giggle like a little school girl.

Prices:

Day lift Tickets: $93

Fresh tracks ticket: $17.25 (includes all you can eat buffet that beats the hell out of most hotel “morning feedings”) There are generally about 200 people per day that take advantage of this opportunity.

The village:

The village is huge, boasting a nice sized food market, liquor store, 5-star restaurants and much more.

We ate at several places; however, our favorite was “The mix by Ric’s” and I only have one word that can describe the experience: Amazing.  We had a few of the wonderful dishes and sat on the patio under some outside heaters and under some blankets (provided for free of course).

If you get a chance to visit, try to splurge and stay at the Four Seasons. They have free cookies and heated pools! If its your birthday while staying at the Four Seasons they will give you a few free cupcakes… Definitely the place to stay while up there.

Vesta Dipping Grill

Voted Best Restaurant in Denver, Best Romantic Restaurant in Denver, Best Place for a First Date and the list goes on and on. Over the past 12 years Vesta Dipping Grill has brought in crowds from all over the country, not only to partake in the eloquent food (over 150 recipes) but also to experience the warm atmosphere and unique architecture (Yea, they won some awards for that too).

VestaHomepage

Not too many restaurants get a place on my list of favorites, but Vesta is certainly at the top, it may be because of the custom built Sangria dispenser, or the fact that the bartenders, seem to be the happiest people I have ever seen behind the counter, tell them Gabe at Scoop The Dirt.com says hi, that is if you don’t want to snuggle into a comfortable booth or table in the dining area, that’s nice too. The “Dipping” part of Vesta comes from the numerous types of dipping sauces that are offered with every plate and you can’t go wrong by following their suggestions.

The first thing you will notice when you step inside is how open the place is, you can see all the way back into the open kitchen, watch as the flames light up the back of the restaurant as chefs Matt Selby and Wade Kirwan prepare the famous Vesta Roll ($12) or Moroccan Spice Grilled Salmon ($22). The colors and exposed brick walls accent the authentic wood floors that are tastefully patched, with of all things, sheet metal. The entire look along with the warm lighting makes it feel like home… only with better food (sorry mom!).  Unlike many restaurants Vesta won’t cram tables together just to get an extra few “customers” each night, nope, they have enough seating for you to get a place for date night and still be able to enjoy yourself without hearing the table next to you talk about the latest episode of entourage.

I went there with the G/F and we had a blast, the service was amazing and for once Jen didn’t have to search through a heavily suggestive menu for the one or two vegetarian options. The truth is, the menu has an ample amount of meat and seafood appetizers and entrées. If you are in Denver or plan to be, check out Vesta’s website for the full menu, directions and a teaser of their upcoming video series “Vesta Cookbook

The Crowd: Mainly 30s-40s business professionals, but don’t let that fool you, the atmosphere is light and extremely fun.

Bios: Josh Wolkon a Boulder transplant from New England started to call Colorado home after he met his soon to be wife Jen (a fellow UMV grad). At the tender age of 24 Josh followed his dream of opening Vesta in Downtown Denver, he was joined by Matt Selby (a Bennigan’s burger and cheese sticks cook turned Executive Chef) to create the wonderfully crafted place that has been lighting up the restaurant radio waves. Vesta Dipping grill is definitely a place that will make you wand to keep coming back just to have a taste of everything they have to offer.

Note: Check out their sister restaurant Stubens for some well crafted comfort food.
