75% less carbs in your spaghetti..yummy

I love pasta, actually I love all things Italian (JD), but one thing I don’t like is an overload of carbohydrates. I focus most of my diet on being carb-conscious and without getting too in-depth, I would like to show how simple it is to avoid an excess of carbs while still enjoying the food you love (or in this case the taste you love by replacing the specific food product altogether).

The bottom-line is that cutting anything out of your diet is HARD! Often times adding veggies and a small amount of fruit (trying to avoid carbs, remember) to your diet can do wonders, so start with that then start to work out and after that worry about cutting carbs. If you already eat plenty of veggies, some fruit and work out, try to cut carbs anywhere you can.

When I talk about cutting carbs, I am talking about taking in less overall carbohydrates, but you still need to be taking some in. There are two types of Carbohydrates, Simple and Complex. Simple carbs are sugars found in sweets, Complex carbs are found in whole wheat, veggies and nuts/seeds. The carbs you do take in should be primarily from complex carbs, those allow your body to use energy over time and better digest the sugar as glucose.

According to the Mayo clinic: It is recommended that you get 45 to 65% of your daily calories from carbohydrates, so a 2,000 calorie-a-day diet calls for 225-325 grams of carbs…

According to men’s fitness: Men who reduce their carb intake to just 8% of their daily calories lost seven pounds of fat and gained two pounds of muscle in six weeks, so a 2,000 calorie-a-day diet calls for 32.5 grams of carbs… (FYI, That’s very hard to do)

Whooooo Gabe, are you kidding!?

Yea, I know those two numbers aren’t even close are they? Now before you jump to one side or another, think about this, if Mayo clinic says 45-65% and Men’s fitness says 8% can we meet somewhere in the middle? How about 30-40%… that is doable by anyone. So if you were to take in 2,000 calories a day, you should ONLY take in, 150-200 grams of carbs per day.

The math:

  • One gram of carbohydrates = 4 calories
  • 30% of 2,000 is 600
  • Divide 600 by 4 (calories)
  • The answer is 150, that is the number of grams of carbs you should be taking in using our 30%range

Try this for two weeks, if you feel that you have enough energy and you aren’t getting carb cravings, often due to too few carbs in one’s diet, especially when trying to cut down for the first few weeks, try to cut down some more. Be sure to see a nutritionist at some point to make sure that you are making proper changes to your diet.

Here is an example of a healthy meal you can make that cuts the carbs of spaghetti by 75%! It tastes great BTW.

Tips:

  • Try to add protein to your diet, if your meal does not have more protein than anything else… add some!
  • The best diet tip I can give you is to write everything down, I use the “Food IQ” app.

Gabe Lee takes action against ATT for dropped calls.. and gets some TV air time in the process.

Are you wasting your time calling customer service and getting nowhere? well I’m in the process of finally getting heard by AT&T, and it all started this evening when a story, “Solve Your Customer Service Problems Faster Online” by Denver news channel 7 showed me and the way I will be “fighting” back. I was interviewed Friday by Marshall Zelinger, 7NEWS Content Producer/Presenter, for using Social Media as an avenue to take un-answered complaints to the world. My choice, a YouTube video. I will be editing over 9 hours of calls with AT&T customer service (including several dropped calls with customer service). As channel 7 was editing the video to be aired tonight, I made my most recient call to AT&T and although helpfull this time, I found the one person that seems to actually care, I was told that officially out of the last 150 calls I made from and around home and work had 22% dropped calls, their words, not mine. Here is the news footage:

I am currently looking for someone who wants to help with graphic, illustration or flash to make my video the next viral video :) email me if you want to help: gabe@scoopthedirt.com

Here is the rest of the interview, what you didnt see on the news but was subesecuently posted on www.thedenvernewschannel.com:

Solve Your Customer Service Problems Faster Online

Customers Report Faster Response By Complaining Via Twitter And Video Blog

Marshall Zelinger, 7NEWS Content Producer/Presenter

POSTED: 4:43 pm MST February 1, 2010

DENVER — The days of spending hours on the phone with customer service may be over. For those who need to resolve issues with customer service, there may be a faster, more technologically savvy way to get help.

“It’s traditional to call customer service over the phone if you’re having issues,” said Gabe Lee, of Boulder. “I’m going to go the next level and I’m going to share it with the world by the only way I know how, and that’s social media.”

Lee told 7News he has spent more than 8 1/2 hours over the last six months calling customer service about dropped cell phone calls. He has recorded four hours of those phone calls. He plans on creating a viral video for anyone online to see his plight. Lee provided 7News a sample of his recordings.

Customer Service: “Since the Second, you’ve had 19 dropped calls with this service.”

Gabe: “And is that counting last night and today?”

Customer Service: “That was, yes.”

Gabe: “You have been taking $116 from me and giving me maybe 50 percent of what I’ve been paying for.”

In another call, you hear the connection fail between Lee and the customer service representative.

Customer Service: “Hello, are you still there?”

Gabe: “Yup, I’m here. Hello? Ah, you’re *#$&ing kidding me!”

“I’m going to make a killer video with all my experiences and share that online,” said Lee.

7News: “What do you hope to get out of that?”

“I hope to get some recognition from AT&T honestly. Hopefully, they’ll look at it and they’ll say ‘wait a minute, we just can’t push our customers around. If they have issues we have to deal with it,’” said Lee.

… It goes on to talk about Dave Carroll and his “United Breaks Guitars” video (7million hits)…

“With my recordings, hopefully I can make something that the community, the social media community, Colorado, the World, can see and hopefully AT&T will listen, finally,” said Lee. “I’ve been talking with AT&T for the last six months, a total amount of time about eight-and-a-half hours. I have it all either recorded or documented. It’s unacceptable that you should have a problem that spans that amount of time.”

7News: “Are you interested in resolving your problem or having it seen by the most people?”

“I think at this point, I’ve given AT&T enough time to resolve my problem. At this point, I want to be seen by as many people as possible to get my point across,” said Lee.

AT&T has provided Lee some compensation. Lee told 7News AT&T contacted Apple to replace his iPhone. AT&T also replaced his sim card and credited 50 percent off his bill for one month. Lee says he only wanted no more dropped calls. Now he says he wants more compensation.

“I would want 50 percent off of my bill from the time that I called them till now, and up from now until it’s fixed. I don’t want more than what I pay for, but I don’t want to pay for more than what I get,” said Lee. “I wasn’t asking for anything for months, I was just asking for the service to be improved. I said, ‘I am not happy with my service. I can’t pay this much for 50 percent of my service.’”

HOW TO USE THE WEB TO GET CUSTOMER SERVICE

Lee pointed out that when calling customer service, there is sometimes a warning that the call may be recorded and monitored. Lee says he wanted to level the playing field.

“I needed some proof that I wasn’t just a customer, an irate customer that’s calling AT&T over and over, making up stories,” said Lee. “I recorded the conversations because I wanted some sort of proof that I’m trying to go through all the steps necessary to get it resolved.”

Getting a complaint ready for online doesn’t have to be complicated. Lee used a flip cam and basic earphones to record video and audio of his calls.

“I can simply place the speaker or the ear bud right to the speaker and I get great audio,” said Lee. “That’s going to make the difference. That’s what’s going to be noticed by people. That’s what I can put out online through social media, and that’s what’s going to be picked up by people and actually looked at.”

…He goes on to talk about using Titter to resolve issues…

Quick note on those “responses”  I have never been called once unless I have just had a dropped call with customer service (if they choose to cal me back), or if I leave two or three voice mails telling them to call me.

Whats up with Sodium?

We all know that too much of anything is bad for us, not counting some of the things Cecilia talks about in her SEX blog.. anyways I’m talking about the stuff in our diets, among other things, fat, carbohydrates, and most recently getting the much attention it deserves, sodium.

In the news
NewYork, the originators of banning trans-fat and restaurants being required to publish calories of menu items, has begun a 5 year process that will “suggest” food manufacturers and restaurant chains significantly lower the amount of sodium in foods. The goal is to reduce the amount of sodium by 20% in the next 5 years.

What is Sodium and why is it so bad?
Well the truth is that sodium is not bad AT ALL! It’s simply the amount we take that is the problem. The average daily intake of sodium for the average American is about 2,300 milligrams (the amount in 1 teaspoon of table salt). So if you are rubbing your head right now thinking that I am a complete tool because there is no way that you eat more than a teaspoon of salt per day, well you may be right, however even if you don’t salt your foods, most of the food you eat is loaded with sodium. The truth is that most of us take in more than twice the recommended amount everyday. Read more about Sodium, including low-sodium recipes, click here.

Don’t panic, here is what you should do..
Drink more water and be conscious of your daily amount of sodium intake. Less sodium=loosing weight! Well its not that easy, but generally speaking the less sodium you take in the less water weight you retain. The numourous health risks outweigh the added water weight though, such as heart disease.

Recipes:
Check out these sites for sodium conscious recipes from the Mayo Clinic.

I don’t trust you Gabe!
OK, fine, I don’t trust you either. But for now, watch my “interview” with Costomized Nutrition and fitness owner and personal trainer Rick Jones. He will explain a little about sodium and why water should be the focus of New York’s latest health push.. Plus as an added bonus ;) he will give you a little insight about carbs and how too much spike your insulin levels and the best time of day to have your daily carb intake.

As I am writing this I am flying to Seattle, the plane is shaky as hell.. anyway, I was just handed some Nabisco cheese nips 21grams (about 30 little chip things..
they have about 10% (240mg) of my daily recommended sodium.. that’s not much right? After all, the entire bag is only 100calories so we are in the clear right? Hell no! 14g carbs 3g of fat My point is that sure 10% is nothing, but am I only going to eat 10 servings of stuff like this today?
That would be 7.5 oz of food today! (21g =10% of daily recommended intake) So 7.5 freaking ounces of food today?
Think about it! I was also given a little pack of honey roasted peanuts. God only knows how much crap is in those.

Losing weight- Diet vs. Exercise and how to finally shed the weight

The holidays are over and food was great, right? Welcome to the dilemma most people face upon gaining a few extra pounds. We most often blame holidays and social gatherings but regardless of who is really at fault there are three main choices you have to combat the added weight.

fatkid

Three Options:

Option 1: Ignore the extra weight, do nothing.

fat-cat

So I ate a little extra this season, my diet is back to normal now and I can expect to go back to pre-holiday weight.

WRONG! In my experience I have found that most people’s idea of a “normal” diet is not good enough to cut the fat of a holiday binge. Chances are that if you describe your diet as normal you are joining the other millions of Americans gaining weight on a normal basis, not to mention the gains from the holidays. Generally speaking the actual amount of fat gained is around 5lbs.
The real problem is getting rid of the fat. Your “Normal” diet just won’t cut it. One solution is to have a regular diet that is a little more strict so going into the holidays you are in a better position to lose any weight you may gain. I have a strict diet and people still offer me carb-loaded deserts and fat-laced appetizers (don’t get me wrong I’ll eat my share of the “bad” stuff). Generally speaking I try to be more strict with my diet and when the holidays roll around or I indulge myself with those apps or deserts, I have an easier time losing added weight. This works for me, since my diet is normally strict I can be a little m ore flexible and not worry about trying too hard post-holidays. This is because I can adjust my “strict” diet to allow myself to burn a few more calories and fat that I may have put on, the truth is that reverting to the above mentioned “normal” diet just isn’t good enough, for most people because that normal diet isn’t burning more fat calories or carbs than you take in.

fat-guy

Think about this: You owe $15,000 in credit balances and you realize that it’s time to stop charging and start paying off your debt. You can’t just stop using the card (thus reducing your regular spending) AND pay off the card. This is because not only do you not only have a bill that needs to be paid, anything you would have used the card on now has to be paid for by some other means. When having a few extra pounds you have to lose the weight AND keep off any future weight your “normal” diet will add on. So to make up for the added weight you do need to make some changes in your calorie, carb, and fat intake.

Option 2: Eat the same but work out more

fat-belly

OK, this is good, you can eat all you want but you will lose weight and that’s that!

WRONG! Even if you aren’t “eating all you want” your body relies heavily on repairing muscle, having energy, and getting the proper nutrients to lose weight, and if you are overloading your body, it becomes harder and harder to lose weight. Think about paying the minimum payment on a credit card, it’s almost impossible to pay off the debt due to the debt to interest rate. To lose weight you need to burn more calories per day than you take in.
Think about this: When you work out your body will burn carbs, calories, and fat…So if you are taking in a lot of carbs through the day, your body is trying to catch up with you and chances are it doesn’t even get a chance to burn much fat or calories because it’s working on the carbs.

EAT LESS!

EAT LESS!

OPTION #3: Winner!!

DON’t eat a “normal” diet, suck it up and start eating a lean more strict diet.

abs

It’s really not that hard, if you can cut out soda for a few weeks or get rid of the cheese in your morning omelet, you will be ahead of the game and already eating better than 80% of Americans. The bottom line is to burn more calories per day than you take in.

Think about this:
One can of Coke = 39g of sugar, 140 calories by cutting soda out of your daily diet you can drastically change your caloric intake and start burning more calories than you take in (Without exercise!) Its not rocket sicence people :) Make some small changes and you can lose weight almost without trying.

TGI Friday’s Cajun Chicken And Shrimp Pasta has 1026 Calories and 40grams of fat.  The recommended daily caloric intake is around 1800. Make some small choices and save the fat for someone else. I would rather eat the TGI Friday’s Low Fat-garlic Chicken Primavera with 265 calories and 14grams of fat.

To calculate your Calorie needs, check this out.

Check out Eat This Not That for some amazing comparisons and insights to the food choices Americans have.

According to Marie Claire (Jan 2010 issue)… No I didn’t buy it because Natalie Portman was on the cover… I actually stole it from the GF to read this article, I swear…The study shows two staff members taking a 30 day challenge to lose weight and get into “bikini shape”.

Andrea, tried the “eat the same and workout more” plan (Option 2 above). She worked out for 45min 3 times per week.
Pounds Lost: 0 (That’s a big FAT ZERO)

Amy, tried the Mayo Clinic “eat this not that” Diet -A must read if you ask me!- (Option 3 above).
Pounds Lost: 10 (now you’re talking!)

I hope this helps people… let me know if you want more info or write a comment with your questions or comments. Happy Holidays.

Safety tips to avoid getting robbed!

I did not write these tips and normally I would try to do some research and give my own opinions. When it comes to safety tips there are only so many that I or anyone else can make up, so I have compiled over 1000 tips (available upon request and given out at each one of my self-defense classes/seminars). The following are a few of those tips and some additional references that expand on this list.

Michelle Crouch wrote a story for Readers Digest after interviewing  prisoners and ex cons and found out some tricks they use to take your stuff.

  • They may look familiar. they may have been there last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator.
  • Don’t leave toys outside the house: Because burglars think there may be good gaming equipment inside the house.
  • Make sure there are track marks in the snow if you are away: No sign of a car pulling in and out is an invitation.
  • Don’t tell friends on social networks that you are on vacation: Thieves access those sites as well.
  • Don’t hide your jewels in the sock drawer or medicine cabinet. It’s the first place they check. They almost never enter a children’s room
  • They look for newspapers piled up on the driveway and  may leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you  to remove it.

How to confront someone about their “bad” or “unhealthy” eating habits.

Many people think bringing up someone’s unhealthy eating habits is rude or a bad thing, the truth is if it is affecting you, your relationship or their health its a problem that SHOULD be addressed.

The hardest part of getting “fit” and staying healthy is diet. Having a healthy diet is perhaps the toughest battle millions of people worldwide (especially in America) will face. Some choose not to face the challenge and some just don’t realize the problem until it is too late. The proper way to tell your loved one or family member this holiday season that they need to loose some weight or at the least start eating healthier can bring an otherwise happy holiday season to a sudden end. It may not be easy to tell someone and get the response that you are looking for because unfortunately not everyone has the same definition of “healthy eating”, and worst yet, a lot of people do not realize that they have been in, or have just begun the downward spiral of unhealthy eating that leads to medical problems, sexual problems, and self-confidence issues. I think it is a great idea to tell someone as soon as you can about their dangerous habits. The most important thing to know is that for whatever reason they have for the way they choose to eat, is based on several issues and simply telling them about it may not be as easy as you think.

NO NO NO: What not to say and when not to say it:

Presentation is key, Your goal should be to communicate with the “eater” and not to communicate at them. Here are some simple rules that you should follow to put you, the “talker” and the eater in a position to talk about what is going on.

  1. My number one rule is to NEVER talk about healthy eating when you are not eating something and the other person is. This leads the person to immediately become defensive, leading them to shut down in response to the criticism, however helpful YOU may think it is. Eating provokes a sense of enjoyment and when someone is enjoying their food and you, who are not enjoying the same food, come along and attack them or their food they have no choice but to defend themselves and their tasty eats.
  2. Never ever talk to the person like you don’t double dip into that bag of Doritos now and again or that you are the picture of health. Often times the talker will unintentionally put themselves on a pedestal and the eater will ALWAYS notice this. The defensiveness will soon follow with, “I saw you eat XX last night and now you are talking to me?” or “you aren’t exactly a supermodel yourself!”
  3. I would strongly advise against being passive aggressive about this (or anything else for that matter). Being anything less that direct in this scenario is a BAD idea. Do not say things like, “Are you sure you want another cookie?” or “don’t think you should slow down on the ice cream?” These are horrible questions and are not open-ended in any way…   The answer you could expect to get is, “Yes” and “Eghhh, maybe.”
  4. Never compare anyone, or yourself for that matter, to someone you see on a magazine or on TV. I know that everyone knows this and its common knowledge by now, but it is VERY important to realize that just about every picture or video of anyone has just about as much pre-production and post-production work as Joan Rivers ( except they do look better). The truth is that whenever we look at someone that we are trying to “talk to”, we compare them to someone else, that’s bad because they more than likely have a long way to go before they can be the next cover model for GQ or Maxim.  My point is that if you compare them to how you want to see them you fail yourself and them instantly. You cannot compare them to anyone but themselves. Start with one or two small changes and work from there. Every person is unique and although just about anyone can have “rock hard 6-pack abs”, it takes a long time to reverse a process that they may have been working on for years.

The Lighter Side: What to say and HOW to say it.

Eating is amazing and I can tell you first hand that eating an entire bag of chips or bucket of ice cream can hit the spot. I can also tell you that it takes a long time to get in the mindset to change one’s habits.

Keep in mind that you are or have been an unhealthy eater, so for that reason you should approach the conversation as if you are BOTH in this together, and don’t just say it, mean it. When you are confronting the eater, try to be as direct as possible with using “we” not “you” statements.

  • Instead of saying, “honey I think you should start eating healthier. “ say, “Honey I think we should start eating healthier,” or “George, I know I am not the picture of health here, I think we can both benefit from eating healthier.”

OK, I know this may be obvious, but naturally the talker in this situation sees the person as having a problem, when both people can be sharing the same bad habits. In the off chance that you are a healthy eater, or think you are, there are some simple statements that I often use when talking to clients or just giving advice that may help you out.

  • Say, “I used to have a problem with carbs, I love bread, but it is so bad for ME (not you!)” or “one way I started to eat healthier was to take out the cheese from my omelets in the morning, I cut out 30grams of fat by not adding 4 slices of Provolone. I had no idea it only took that little change to help me start burning stored  fat instead of the calories and fat from that cheese.

NOTE: If you are not a “fitness expert, dietitian or have years of experience DO NOT give advice! Instead do some research together, after you express the issue, sit down on the computer or iPhone (wait..ATT won’t work so stick to your computer) and research some small changes you can make to work towards a healthier diet.

Tips:

  1. Write down everything you eat then look up the nutritional contents over a few days and based on that information you can start to work on your diet.
  2. Cut one thing out of your diet for a week or two, maybe its soda, cheese, or bread.
  3. Only if you were able to cut something out and keep it out for a week or two, do it again with something else, now do that for a week or two.
  4. Write down what you are eating for a few days and compare that to your first records. You should notice that you are eating healthier and by now you have lost some weight and are getting a little motivated.
  5. Start exercising, since diet is the MOST important part of being healthy and perhaps the hardest we covered the beginning of that process first. If you did not make it to this point you probably won’t keep a consistent gym schedule anyways so forget it! Go back to step one until you are able to go a few weeks of cutting some “bad” stuff from your diet.
  6. Start eating healthier, add some more veggies to your diet (if you haven’t already), SEEK PROFESSIONAL GUIDANCE FROM THIS POINT. When you get this far you have proven to yourself that you can stick to some changes in your diet and personal training or advise would be a great idea to get started in a more advanced routine of eating healthier and exercising.

Note:

  • It is important to keep the proper amount of Protein, fiber, vitamins and other minerals coming in but most often you are getting those from other sources, for example trying to get protein from cheese is always a bad idea because of the calories and fat that comes with it.
  • If you cannot completely cut out something, try to cut it in half, or change your bread intake to a healthier (low carb/fat/cal and high fiber) choice.

Check out nutritiondata.com to find out the nutritional contents in the food you are eating. Write down the food you are eating (all of it!), and start noticing exactly what your body is dealing with.

iPhone users check out the Food IQ app for an easy way to track everything you eat. Hell, if you cant use the phone to make calls (thanks ATT) you might as well use it to start eating healthier.

Dammit people, lock your car doors!

I decided to forgo the research on number of vehicle abductions. Why? because I am going to make this super simple for you all, the chance you will get carjacked and or abducted whilst in your vehicle are slim, unless you start making your way to much larger cities who will remain nameless, but rhyme with Smew Smork or smos smangeles . So there is only a small chance it will happen to you…tell that to the person that had to explain to their family why they need a ride back to Philadelphia from Canada (my friends sister was abducted and forced to drive several hundred miles and cross the Canadian border by some crazy guy, and that’s the “best” outcome I have heard about!).

Here is the number one rule to follow.

Lock your damn doors!
The first thing you should do when you are CLOSING the car door is start reaching for the lock.

DO NOT put on your seat belt first (I’ll explain why later).

Why?
Because a “bad guy” will be looking for a cute girl or just a good opportunity to walk up and get into the passenger side of the car and then tell you to drive! He may or may not have a gun and chances are he does not just want a ride to Canada!

What to do:
Should you find yourself in this precarious situation, you should do three things simultaneously (you can handle this I promise), while opening the door start screaming and FALL out of the car! Do not get out of the car like a normal human, fall out so you become a smaller target for the bad guy to grab onto (not to mention you probably have limited control over your body at this point from being in this situation so don’t complicate things by trying to get out all civilized) People will be more likely to notice should you be half out of the car screaming at the top of your lungs.. People won’t think you are trying to get away from a rogue bee or something, they will see you are in duress and they WILL help you!

carjacking

Why not to put on your seat belt first? well let’s say you did find that wacko in the seat next to you and now you actually follow my rules, BUT WAIT! You have to now reach over and unbuckle yourself first! Well that’s about the last thing Mr. Crazy is going to let you do… Think about it folks.

Stay Safe…Oh and email me some “what if” scenarios.. and I will write about it, if I write about yours I’ll buy you an ice cream cone.

Martial Arts -in a nut shell- and what is BJJ anyways.. Sounds dirty

There is rarely one type, style or discipline that is “better” than any other, most often an “expert” will tell you, different types of martial arts cannot be compared with one another and that each discipline has its own unique techniques and practices. Sometimes extreme differences in styles can be a deciding factor in a “better” or “worse” situation when two disciplines are against each other. The only clear example of one discipline “beating” another time and time again would be Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or “BJJ”. Let’s say a expert at Brazilian jujitsu were to fight an expert of just about any other martial art (see the video for an example) the winner just about every time would be and has been the BJJ expert …If the BJJ guy or girl can get the other person to the ground there are very few other martial arts that can compare to BJJ because of its unique on-ground style of fighting.  Just a little side note, if you are fighting a BJJ expert, you will probably end up on the ground… so you figure it out.

Here is an example of an expert in Kenpo Karate VS. an expert in BJJ… WOW

Here are a few styles that I like. I have practiced and competed in a few, I consider these to be among the most popular.

Note: Martial arts can be used to defend yourself, but it takes a lot of training to use martial arts as self defense, practical, common sense and “easy” techniques are recommended for self-defense, not necessarily learning a specific martial art.

Marine Corps Martial arts program: “’USA”

MCMAP takes a little of every other martial arts and adds some small weapons including knives, hand guns, batons, rifles, and sometimes the throat you just ripped out to create a no-nonsense hand-to-hand style of combat based fighting, no rules and “no holds barred”. They use a belt system just like traditional martial arts. And it only costs 4 years of your life to learn some of it.

Fun Fact: This is what I practiced while in the US Marines. Most of what I teach now is based on these techniques, sans the throat taking-out, it’s bad for repeat business.

Kempo Karate: “Japan”

Lots of styles influence and are influenced by Karate, it is a popular form of martial arts in the USA, the main reason is because the branding of the name Karate is synonymous with “self-defense” (which makes me angry…see above) so if your kid says, “mommy, I wanna learn…” and the next words out of his or her mouth is NOT “..to play the clarinet”, it’s going to be “Karate”. It’s because of its popular name that has resulted in just enough following for the millions of Karate schools to prosper.

Fun Fact: Chuck Norris is famous for his Karate and the fact that, “there is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures Chuck Norris has allowed to live.”Other Chuck Norris facts

TaeKwonDo: “Korea”

Almost as popular in the US as Karate, it is quickly becoming a household name. I studied Tae Kwon Do (TKD) with the world class TKD team, the Gray family of Ohio. Because of their training I became a state TaeKwonDo champion in 2005. When I was training with the Marines in Korea, I saw the Korean R.O.K. Marines doing their crazy ass TKD, and that’s what started my love for the sport-style fighting.

FunFact: Some high schools and colleges give you credit for training in their TKD classes. There are many places to learn in every city in the US however, It is very hard to find a good TKD school, I have looked and rarely have i found a class that would rather teach you correctly than hurry you through and sign you up for a long commitment for $$$.. except for the Gray family of course!!

Brazilin Jiu-Jitsu: “USA/Brazil”

Originally started in, you guessed it Brazil, by the Gracie family. Grappling and various forms of Jiu Jitsu, jujutsu, Judo and others have influenced the art, but the Gracie family perfected it. Around 1914, Gastão Gracie was taught by Japanese practitioner Esai Maeda aka Conde Koma. Gastão taught his sons, including Helio Gracie and it eventually evolved into arguably the most popular and effective martial arts in the world. Read more

Fun Fact: Royce Gracie helped make BJJ popular by winning the 1st 2nd and 4th Ultimate fighting championships in the 1990s, against often bigger opponents, sometimes without kicking or punching.

Kung Fu: “Chinese”

David Carradine made me like it when he dodged bullets and always talked really slowly… I had ADD so his sloth like speech allowed my brain to work momentarily and focus on his badassness.

Fun Fact:  Kung Fu is like 4000 years old, so just after the dinosaurs and before little baby Jesus, people were dodging bullets coming from machine guns and tanks and fighting bad guys in NY city.. note: I may have my history a little mixed up.. it’s the ADD. It goes a little deeper than dodging bullets tho, there is long history of discipline and honor with practitioners of Kung Fu.

Ninjutsu: “Japan”

Think Ninja.. Assassins, scouts, spies and all around badasses.

Fun Fact: shurikens or “Throwing stars” are not meant to kill anyone, just to distract someone long enough for the badass ninja to whip out a sword or another equally sharp object to cut you in half, bringing the phrase “kill you to death” to mind…or, they will just let you bleed to death when trying to take out the “throwing star”. My friend and I got some at the flea market when we were kids and threw them at stuff.. lots of fun, technically we were real ninjas, until I lost mine in the back yard…and in the neighbors tree. Capoeira: “Brazilian/African”

Created and practiced by African slaves to stay under the radar of practicing self-defense or fighting, they were able to create a strong bond while “playing” and also to use it as a deadly self-defense /martial art when needed.

Note: I practiced/played a lot of Capoeira and I’ll tell you, if you want to be able to kick someone in the eyes while doing a back flip while listening to some kickass music, look no further.

Boxing: “USA”

Two Guys or Girls, put on gloves and start hitting each other. Made famous mostly in the USA and Mexico, it has roots being traced back to Egyptian carvings on pyramids.

Fun Fact: June 28, 1997 Mike Tyson bit BOTH of Evander Holyfield’s ears.. Actually ripping a piece off of one and spitting it on the floor. Talk about getting an ear full.. right? Anyone?  Never mind.

Think… kick boxing on steroids, generally, they use a lot of knees and kick using their shins, some consider this to be the world’s deadliest sport that is shown in public venues.

Lucha Libre (Mexico, think about the movie Nacho Libre)

World Championship Wrestling AKA wraslyn, WCW (WCW-was WWF but the World Wildlife Foundation also thought this “wrestling” to be incredibly stupid, so they took the name for themselves, forcing hillbillies everywhere to rename their favorite sport).
