‘Community’ is a new show on NBC starring Talk Soup’s Joel Mchale, I was surprised it was on NBC and not ABC because from all the previews it looked pretty lame, hence my reluctance to watch it. When I finally exhausted watching everything else on the internet I decided to check out the pilot because, to be honest,
McHale is pretty fuckin funny on The Soup. Now I don’t know who writes the show, but it seems like a lot of the jokes are McHale based (i.e. ‘he looks like seacrest’).
The plot is simply ludicrous, apparently joel’s character is some real awesome lawyer that somehow faked out the bar that he never attended undergraduate school. Now lawyers, is this really possible? I find it hard to believe, on top of that they don’t mention if he went to law school either. I would imagine in order to get to law school you’d need some sort of premliminary eduaction, but maybe I’m wrong or the show just doesn’t think it’s audience will care about such minute details. From there he plays your stereotypical hollywood lawyer who for whatever reason thinks he’s better than everyone else, but who is forced to attend ,(oh no not this) that’s right , community college. What could be worse. The show then goes on to explain how worthless and meaningless community college is , which I, holding an associate degree from one of our countries finer community instiutions, was quite offended. I mean sure it is really easy to get through, and yea you don’t really have to go to class or do your homework, but let’s recognize it for the fine supplemental eduaction it provides. Anyways , they rely on bashing community college when they run out of lawyer jokes.
Now to get to the supporting cast. Well first theres this british guy, who you might think is the guy who plays larry david’s psychiatrist and stars in Hamlet 2 ( who’s not really that funny to begin with), but no, infact what we get is a far less talented and more annoying britishmen. I mean he’s really bad, nothing funny or captivating about anything he does or says, they could of easily eliminated this character. Next is a budget version of the Indian kid who’s on Weeds and 30 rock, again I thought this was him when I saw the commercials, but it turns out to be some guy that looks like him. With that said he’s not that bad, he has and extrodiary ability to talk really fast, which is more than I can say about the rest of the cast. There’s also the woman from parks and recreation, but in this show she’s given way less funnier lines. Do I have to go on, I’m getting irritated just thinking about this show, but yea theres also some typical female romance interest who plays the typical role of : “I’m smart and I’m not a whore and I’m supposed to be sassy” or something , but this get’s old like halfway through he first set of lines. If you’ve ever seen any of the movies that came out after American Pie that were in the same vein, then you’ve seen this type of chic. Like in real life, Joel McHale would waste any time trying to nail this broad. I would say with some luck, but it probably won’t need it to be cancelled for next season, but who knows maybe everyone loves this show and I don’t know what I’m talking about.
The only saving grace point seems to be Chevy Chase’s character who is hilarious, but didn’t seem to get enough screen time, and maybe he will in later episodes, but don’t ask me to find out. This show wishes it was Parks and Recreation, but the writing staff tries to hard and seems to lack any sense of humor. Joel McHale should stick to what he does best, which is reading the teleprompter and making witty remarks on the endless amount of terrible ‘reality’ tv footage.
